1. Grayson Highlands State Park

Located near Virginia’s two highest mountains (Mount Rogers and Whitetop), this spot will leave you enchanted by the breathtaking views. With peaks that are 5,000 feet high, you can see for miles. Waterfalls and overlooks make for beautiful spots to rest along the way.

Campsites are available to reserve, including horse camping areas with electric and water hookups. Stables are also available. The Virginia Highlands Horse Trail and the Appalachian Trail can be accessed year-round from this location.

2. Hungry Mother State Park

Popular for visitors who like water activities, this park has a 108-acre lake located high up in the mountains. Swimming, boating, and fishing are permitted and encouraged.

Consider renting the family lodge for your visit, which sleeps up to 15 people. Other amenities include campgrounds, a restaurant, hiking and biking trails, and a gift shop. The Hemlock Haven Conference Center is the perfect venue for your next large gathering.

3. Smith Mountain Lake State Park

This beautiful park offers a bathhouse with hot showers and an area to wash dishes. All camping sites include a fire ring grill and picnic table, and firewood is available for purchase. Tents, campers, and RV’s can be accommodated at this campground.

Located on the second largest freshwater lake in Virginia, you will find lots of water activities to do during your visit. There are also miles of trails to explore, ranging in length from half a mile to 3 miles long.

4. New River Trail State Park

The New River Trail is 57 miles in length and runs along the New River for 39 miles. People of every age and ability will enjoy the adventure, as the trail has a gentle slope making it easy to climb.

Horse-lovers will appreciate all of the special amenities to accommodate their horses, including a horse arena. There are also horses for rent at several locations inside the park. Primitive campsites are available to rent.

5. Claytor Lake State Park

This park offers a full-service marina with boat rentals and is the perfect choice for a day of swimming, hiking, and picnicking. Learn about the ecology of the area by visiting the historic Howe House, where you will find interactive exhibits to educate and entertain all ages.

A variety of campground options are available, from basic tent camping to those accommodating large RV units. There are also three lodges and 13 cabins available for rent, which look out over the 4,500-acre lake. The Water’s Edge Meeting Facility is an ideal location for weddings or gatherings of any type.
